Geography studies the relationship between people and the environment.  Our aim at Formby High is to equip our students with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to enable them to deal with an increasingly more complex world.  Many skills developed in the geography courses are valuable transferable life skills such as mapwork, data handling, ICT and problem solving.  These are introduced at all levels through classwork, coursework and fieldwork.

All students in Years 7 and 8 study geography in their form groups and in Year 9 students are placed in sets.  It is then available as an option in Years 10 and 11 where there are several parallel sets who sit the AQA specification A GCSE examination.  At Key Stage 5 the subject is available at AS and A levels.  Many geography students continue their interest in the subject at university.

The geography department occupies three well-resourced teaching rooms.  There is also a resources room within the department for individual work and research.  There are, available in the department, a range of media resources including computer facilities with internet connections and video equipment.  Interactive whiteboards are installed in three of the teaching rooms.

The department encourages and facilitates the use of ICT, in class groups using the school computer rooms or as individuals researching and presenting their work using the department machines, the Learning Resource Centre or their own resources at home.

Fieldwork is an important part of geography at Formby High School. Students have opportunities to study both their local environment and to spend time visiting contrasting localities such as the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.
