History Mrs. J.V.
Baker The department has two rooms on the top floor of the main classroom block. The rooms have access to a range of audio-visual equipment including interactive whiteboards The department recognises its role within the school as a whole in helping to prepare students for life outside school and is incorporating new initiatives in Citizenship. It works closely with other departments. In particular, it shares a common policy with the other Humanities departments regarding presentation of work, marking etc. Within the department students: i) acquire a body of knowledge which includes local, national and international events; ii) develop historical skills; iii) are helped towards an understanding of current affairs; iv) are encouraged to take an interest in the past as a leisure pursuit. We place emphasis on students acquiring historical skills, especially the interpretation and evaluation of source-based evidence. Time is devoted to developing the ability to express ideas coherently. Computers are used for desk-top publishing, simulations, data processing and graphics. Regular visits are made to museums and historical sites (e.g. Liverpool Maritime Museum, Chester Grosvenor Museum and Quarry Bank Mill). Archaeological field-work is undertaken at Chester. In the first 3 years students will be taught 6 Study Units in compliance with Curriculum 2000. At GCSE the OCR Modern World History syllabus will be studied. At AS/A2 students follow various units relating to 20th Century History (with an emphasis on the USA and Russia). |
