FHS School

Formby High School is an outstanding mixed 11-18 school of over 1,000 students occupying an attractive campus close to the centre of Formby village and convenient for both rail and bus travel. Its spacious grounds are lined with mature trees and its buildings are a blend of old and new.

Facilities at the school are very good. Sports provision is generous with outdoor football and hockey pitches, athletics track, six recently renovated tennis and netball courts and an outdoor multi-use games area. A large sports hall and gymnasium complete the facilities available to the P.E. department. The buildings include a number of specialist areas: seven fully equipped science laboratories, five large I.C.T. suites and art and design technology curriculum areas.

As an arts college we have enhanced performing arts provision which now includes an arts studio, an arts technology suite with a sound recording studio, a Yamaha keyboard room, a large music room with practice/rehearsal rooms and a dance/drama workshop room. The curriculum areas have well-maintained classrooms with modern furniture and equipment. A number of curriculum areas have their own ICT facilities including interactive whiteboards. The modern foreign language curriculum area has a large, modern, digital language laboratory facility. Learning support has its own ‘Literacy Suite’ to support its work and the science curriculum area has created a large conservation area as an outdoor resource. A large Learning Resource Centre (LRC) contains an extensive ICT facility and a well-resourced library.

The school is enjoying considerable success and is looking to develop further in future years. We have received the School Achievement Award in each of the three years of its existence, 2000, 2001, and 2002. We were the first school in Sefton to receive the Artsmark Gold Award and we received it for the second time in 2004. We became an arts college and a Creative Partnerships school in 2002 and we have received the Sportsmark Award in 2002, 2006 and 2007. The school is very popular and we have been oversubscribed now for seven years, whilst the numbers in our sixth form have grown steadily. We have an outstanding and thoroughly deserved reputation for the range and quality of our extracurricular programme. Our students are well-behaved, have excellent attitudes and commitment and enjoy very good relationships with the staff.

We enjoy the overwhelming support of our parents and we have a very active parents and teachers association, the ‘Friends of Formby High School’. We are proud of our school and we work hard to maintain the positive, caring, friendly ethos which features so evidently in all aspects of the school.

Our most recent Ofsted report in May 2008 confirms our view that we are an “Outstanding” school with a driving ambition to be recognized as the best school in Sefton. We demand a lot of our teaching and support staff but in return, we offer a stimulating and exciting environment in which to work. We welcome applications from colleagues who share our philosophy and our ambition.

In December 2007, we became an International Baccalaureate World School and we will offer the I.B. Diploma Programme in the Sixth Form in September 2008.
