Facilities
On site we
have a sports hall, gymnasium, outdoors we have a multi-use games area
which provides the department with a superb facility for basketball,
hockey, netball and tennis and a large, grassed playing - field for team
games and athletics.
Lessons
& Activities
At Key Stage 3
classes are taught in either mixed boys and girls classes or single sex
depending on the teaching set.
In Years 7 - 9 students
follow the National Curriculum (KS3) which includes gymnastics, dance,
athletics and games, including basketball, badminton, hockey, netball,
football, cricket, rounders, tennis and volleyball.
As students move up the school, further activities are introduced
such as aerobics, table tennis, yoga and pilates.
Students are also offered the opportunity to participate in
off-site activities including fitness training, fitness classes and
golf. As students move up the school, further skills are introduced such
as aerobics and table tennis. Training methods are discussed and
students in Years 10 and 11 participate and specialise in a major game
of their choice and receive a balanced programme of additional
activities. All of our Key
Stage 4 students complete two nationally recognized qualifications in
sport; Sport Education and the Junior Sports Leaders Award.
Extra-Curricular
Activities
In addition to
lessons, there are opportunities for students to participate in
activities at lunchtime and after school.
The department runs a hugely successful inter-class tournament
throughout the year in which all our students are involved.
They compete in a variety of activities including football,
hockey, badminton and are joined by their staff tutor for the final
event of the year; the
tug-of-war. The department
has a huge number of very successful
students and teams competing in a large number of sports at
local, district, county and national levels.
Recent additions to our extra-curricular programme have included
street dance, volleyball and ruby.
Examinations
There is the
opportunity for students to study P.E. at both G.C.S.E. and AS/A2Level
standard. For G.C.S.E. we follow the Edexcel syllabus which involves
practical and theory work. For
A-level, we follow the OCR syllabus which involves anatomy and
physiology, sports psychology, skill acquisition, contemporary studies
and historical aspects of sport and P.E. Practical units are also
followed and form 30% of the final assessment.
A growing number of
students are going on to continue with sports science and studies at
university following completion of A-Level P.E.
